Desexing your pet is a common procedure that stops them from reproducing. In male pets it is commonly known as a “castration” and in females it is known as a “spay”. A pet is generally desexed around the age of 6 months old, however there is no age limit.

Desexing

There are a lot of benefits to desexing your animal including:

Preventing unexpected and unwanted litters.
Prevention of prostate and testicular cancer in males.
In females it can help prevent infection of the uterus (pyometra) and breast cancer (mammary tumours).
Stopping the females from going “in season” and decreasing aggression especially in males.
It can help the animal live a longer, healthier life.
Reduces council registration fees.

Pre-Surgery and Post Surgery Care.

Before surgery:

Call us on 4639 1733 to book an appointment for your animal’s surgery. If your pet is a dog, bathe them at least 1 day before the surgery as they will not be able to be washed until the stitches have dissolved or are removed 10-14 days later.
Do not feed your animal after 8pm the night before the operation, and do not give water after 8am on the day of the procedure.
A blood test is sometimes performed prior to the surgery to check the function of vital organs.
The vet will do an in-depth physical exam before administration of an anaesthetic.

Post-Surgery:

Keep your animal calm as the effects of the anaesthetic do take a while to wear off.
Water and food should be limited on the night after the surgery.
Make sure that if medications are prescribed they are given as instructed.
The area where your pet rests should be as clean as possible.
It is recommended that you check the incision site for signs of disruption or infection. This can be swelling, bleeding, discharge or an increased redness. The vet must be contacted straight away if any of the symptoms do appear.
